A vacancy for a EDRS Ground Segment Systems Engineer (d/m/f) has arisen within Airbus Defence and Space in Ottobrunn.

Responsibilities

As a Ground Station Systems Engineer, you are responsible for the design, development and technical procurement of EDRS ground stations. In the frame of the procurement activities, you also follow the development and acceptance phase from the request of proposal (RFP) up to the final acceptance of the stations.

After station acceptance, you accompany the implementation of the ground station into the EDRS Ground Segment until the station goes live in operations. During the operational phase, you are the technical point-of-contact for any anomalies that might occur and support the technical resolution of the issue.

These activities comprises the currently existing four EDRS core stations and potential future user ground stations both within the Western European coverage area of the EDRS GEO satellites as well as further ground stations to be constructed in the frame of the EDRS extension (GlobeNet) in the Asia-Pacific region (e.g. Japan and Australia).

This job combines knowledge of several disciplines with the ability to think outside the box. You will work on complex systems and applications including hardware and software solutions. Your activities will be performed in close cooperation with our EDRS system engineering team, internal/external clients and sub-contractors.

The holder of this position will be located at Ottobrunn and reports to the head of the engineering team.

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Specifying, negotiating and agreeing on the Ground Station and associated subsystem requirements with our internal and external customers
  • Translating application requirements into functionality
  • Planning, designing and implementing Ground Station solutions
  • Conducting trade studies by varying a wide range of parameters and alternatives
  • Supervising testing of the developed systems and components by the subcontractor, including failure analysis and resolution
  • Supporting users after the implementation
  • Technical assessment of non-conformances, discrepancies and waivers
  • Support of the quality management process during the development phase as well as during operations.

Profile

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

  • Educated to a Master’s degree in Microwave, Telecommunications, Electronics or other related Engineering or equivalent
  • Profound knowledge of ground station systems engineering (i.e. front-end as well as baseband design) for space applications for LEO and GEO satellite missions
  • Consolidated knowledge of Modem designs (i.e. modulation schemes, encoding techniques and frame structuring, e.g. CCSDS and DVB-S2x)
  • Deep knowledge in associated areas such as TT&C, ranging, monitoring & control (M&C), servo and air-conditioning engineering
  • Strong knowledge of communication engineering including RF link budgets and antenna designs
  • Good experience in software based systems and IT networks
  • Experience in design, development, integration, verification, operations of Ground Stations and associated processes
  • Familiarity with EU directives for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), low voltage and product safety (incl. human safety) –
  • Ability to document the own work according to the standards of ESA programs
  • Ability to operate in a multi-national team and organisation
  • Work style characterised by autonomy, proactive behaviour and cooperation
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with ESA and ESA standards as well as industry standards
  • Language skills: English fluent, German language skills are advantageous
