About this job

Reaction Engines Limited is looking to recruit an experienced propulsion systems architect to work in our Future Programmes group on a range of new and novel aerospace propulsion concepts. Working alongside other propulsion systems specialists you will be involved in the design, analysis and specification of a variety of propulsion systems and sub-systems for future aerospace platforms, including high-speed applications and space access.

Ideal candidates will be creative and independently-minded individuals with a strong knowledge of aerospace propulsion, including thermodynamic performance, engine modelling techniques, platform integration and airframe and engine matching.  With a track record of delivery you will be self-motivated and be able to lead an integrated team of engineers in the development of appropriate solutions to deliver customer and business needs.  You will also be confident in presenting and justifying your solutions and recommendations to peers, senior managers and external partners.

Competitive salary.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Future Programmes the role will include:

  • Providing thermodynamic and performance analysis of propulsion system concepts in support of Future Programmes’ technology development and programme activities
  • Developing engine design solutions based on the analysis
  • Working with engineering leads, customers and partners to define propulsion system requirements
  • Identifying new and novel solutions to propulsion system technical problems
  • Providing the technical lead on a range of internal and external projects
  • Working with the engineering design teams and external partners to deliver all aspects of the propulsion system design and analysis
  • Preparing, presenting and reporting technical work to peers, senior managers, external suppliers and customers

  • Excellent engine thermodynamic cycle design capability and an understanding of engine sizing, matching, optimisation and operations
  • Good knowledge of air breathing propulsion systems/engine modelling techniques
  • Understanding of off-design propulsion system behaviour and likely transient limitations, requirements and operability
  • Strong appreciation of the requirements for propulsion system/platform integration and engine matching requirements (e.g. SFC, L/D, operational behaviour etc.)
  • Appreciation of one-dimensional component design approaches
  • Knowledge of limitations in rotating machinery mechanical design, material capabilities and industry trends in temperature capability and novel developments
  • Strong appreciation of likely failure modes and their effects on system behaviour and safety
  • Good appreciation of likely aircraft and propulsion control architecture requirements
  • Ability to outline key structural system functions and requirements
