Sapienza Consulting, a tpgroup company is working with many exciting new ventures around the world involved with innovative New Space technologies surrounding earth observation.

On behalf of our client Orbitare, we are looking to recruit an experienced Satellite Communications System Engineer to be based in Luxembourg. The incumbent will develop further the existing design of the store-and-forward, delay-tolerant communication network of Spaceloop to ensure that it meets the user level specifications in terms of the data capacity per user and day, the statistical delay in the data delivery, the price of the service and the terminals, and the parameters of usability.

The systems engineer shall develop a model to emulate the performance of the entire communication network, which includes the space, ground, and user segments, and use it as the base for the system trade-offs. From the starting point of the current implementation, they will confirm the selection of technologies and hardware, or propose alternatives. They will also oversee the technical management of the suppliers of satellite platform, user terminals, ground gateways, and selection of the approach for the TT&C system.

The post holder will coordinate a team of RF/DSP engineers, SW network architect and programmers, spectrum engineer, will supervise the operations of the two In-Orbit Demonstration missions currently in orbit, will work with the project manager to meet their mutual objectives, and with the higher management of the company to support the business decisions with their inputs and expertise.

This position requires someone familiar will all aspects of telecommunication systems and with the dynamics of complex projects, that thrives in a dynamic cross-functional organization, is not afraid to debate ideas openly, and is flexible enough to pivot on constantly evolving requirements.

Main tasks

• Demonstrate initiative in advancing the technology of the company; vision to identify strategic opportunities; and the ability to initiate action to achieve success in strategic opportunities
• Taking ownership of the communication system of Spaceloop, establishing the model to evaluate its performance, and updating it with the results of each design loop
• Maintaining and developing further the user and the system level specifications
• Driving the development and test logic and maintaining the verification control plan
• Managing the interfaces among the different subsystems
• Managing the different engineering budgets (mass, power, data, and others)
• Leading and coordinating the work of the engineering team
• Managing partners and suppliers in collaboration with the project manager
• Preparing and leading the technical reviews with the external stakeholders

Qualifications

• A MSc degree in Telecommunication/Aerospace Engineering or equivalent field
• Proven experience in developing complex systems, preferably in the satcom domain
• Good knowledge of the constituents of the system and their interactions: physical layer, MAC techniques, network layers, application layer, network architecture, the space, ground, and user segment infrastructure, with consideration to the user experience
• Proficient in simulation tools, preferably MATLAB/Simulink
• Experience in leading highly skilled teams and dealing with partners and suppliers
• Fluent in English
• Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
