About this job

We are Isar Aerospace and we are at the forefront of New Space building a modern space business to enable faster, better and cheaper access to space.

Our mission is to help democratise space and use it for good in order to improve life on Earth now and for the future generations.

We are a fast-growing company aiming to provide sustainable and environmentally friendly launch solutions for small and medium-sized satellites and constellations into Low Earth Orbit. The company is privately funded by world-leading technology investors with strong commitment and support and our team is made of driven and talented people with a real passion for space innovation.

We’re making rockets in a way that hasn’t been done before disrupting a traditional industry. If you are up for the challenge, want to work on cutting-edge projects and be part of a team changing the world for better, come, join us and launch your career!

Responsibilities

The Functional Design Engineer will be part of the technical development team in the Testing Department of the company. The goal of safe, reliable and rapid testing and space launch operations can only be achieved with the support of a wide variety of rigorously designed and developed ground infrastructure. This includes propulsion and stage test stands for qualification and acceptance testing in the short-term as well as launchpads in the mid-term future. Close cooperation with the other departments of the company such as the propulsion technology or launch vehicle teams is necessary since their requirements dictate the design of the ground support equipment. The Functional Design Engineer plays a critical role during the initial development steps of such facilities. The engineer drives the design towards maturity and takes ownership of the hardware selection and procurement process as well.

More specifically, you will:

  • Design the functional aspects of fluid system facilities for liquid rocket engine development
  • Design, check and refine P&IDs for fluid (sub)systems
  • Conduct dimensioning calculations and run numerical simulations to obtain relevant design parameters of the subsystems (vessel volumes, necessary insulation, maximum flow velocities etc.)
  • Verification of design
  • Select and procure suitable hardware for fluid systems based on the requirements of the different facilities
  • Write technical documentation and participate to reviews of designed systems

Profile

Musts:

  • Relevant engineering qualification/engineering bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Proficient in the functional design of high- and low-pressure gas and cryogenic propellant systems
  • Experience in modelling and simulating cryogenic fluid systems and pressurization systems by means of software such as EcoSimpro or Python scripts
  • Passionate about new space, curious and eager to learn
  • In-depth knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, and their application to real hardware (valves, regulators, etc.)
  • Driven to deliver and constantly push the boundaries
  • Take ownership and accountability for your own actions and mistakes
  • Humble and willing to go out of your way to help others
  • Can-do attitude and outstanding communication skills
  • Fluent English. German is highly preferred

Nice-to-haves:

  • Knowledge of rocket propulsion systems and testing of such systems is an asset
  • Relevant work experience in chemical process engineering or a similar field
  • Ability to interface with suppliers and negotiation skills would be desired
  • Cryogenic propellants safety and operation topics knowledge
