The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) position is located in the GKN Alabama Fuel Systems (AFS) Tallassee, AL facility.  The ME is responsible for providing technical expertise and support within the Manufacturing Processes through its lifecycle and acts as the primary Manufacturing representative at all program / technical reviews & externally (with customer & suppliers). Will ensure the manufacturing system meets stakeholder requirements including; technical compliance; adherence to ME processes and standards and compliance business case (including safety, quality, delivery and cost).  Resolve quality problems and implement corrective action.

Responsibilities

  • Support the manufacture of test assets.
  • Transition new products from development to serial production.
  • Identifies engineering problems and initiate corrective action to ensure parts are in line with quality standards and production requirements.
  • Performs effective root cause and corrective action to escapes and non-compliance reports using various quality tools.
  • Communicates with Design Engineering to determine best Manufacturing process and gauging/test equipment requirements.
  • Communicates with Manufacturing personnel to gain input during development.
  • Conducts special quality studies to determine process capability, and reduce quality losses.
  • Establishes and maintains a continuous improvement program for identifying, controlling and minimizing quality costs, i.e., scrap rework, appraisal cost.
  • Delivery of a manufacturing system that fulfils all stakeholder requirements, including Quality, Health & Safety, design, producibility, business case etc.
  • Support Design Engineers on their technical reviews (internal & external) as required; Accountable for RF Welding, bonding, and laying plys to form rubber products into fuel systems; first article and configuration changes; tooling changes; monitoring of tools requiring repair or replacement; and new product quotes. In addition: provides direct support to production operation in areas such as changes to B.O.M., interpretation of prints to ensure ply orientation and contour and specialized assembly issues.
  • Controls the transition of new tools from design through change control to verify correctness of tools and production parts.
  • Provides continuous process improvement through the revision of work instructions, statistical process control (SPC), creation of shop aides, operator training, re-development and engineering process changes.
  • Complies with the GKN Compliance and Ethics Policy on Contracting with the United States Government in all areas of responsibility involving direct and indirect contracting with the United States Government.

Profile

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree such as Aerospace engineering, Mechanical engineering, Manufacturing engineering or Materials/Composite engineering related degree required, OR In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree the applicant may have three (3) or more years of work experience as a process engineer (or similar position).
  • Two (2) or more years of work experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • U.S. Person per ITAR regulations to comply with export compliance.

Additional Qualifications:

  • RF Welding experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Aerospace fuel systems is strongly preferred
  • Experience or training in the manufacture of rubber/bonding/composite/metallic/or tooling.
  • Experience with manufacturing standards, process control techniques, developmental test equipment including SPC, gauging and instrumentation.
  • Experience reading manufacturing sketches/blueprint and customer specifications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication – able to effectively create working relationships with internal and external customer.
  • Ability to manage projects, creating, executing and reporting project work plans.
  • Professional fluency with personal computer hardware and software applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Practical problem solving/8D and other root cause tools.
  • CATIA model review preferred.
