GKN Western Approach have a vacancy for Router Operators in the Industrial Value Stream. This role is responsible for CNC machining of composite and metallic aircraft components in line with design and engineering requirements. Performs a full range of machine shop work at the skilled trade level, including making new or replacement machine parts. Operates all common machine tools, such as lathe, boring mill, miller, drill press, grinders, etc as well as moden CNC machines. Understands working properties of common metals, reads complicated blueprints, and understands use of coolants and lubricants.Representative Activities include: Sets up and operates all standard machine tools, Plans and lays out work, Makes parts to close tolerances.

Responsibilities

  • Machine, rout, measure, trim and fettle composite and metallic aircraft components in line with CNC program parameters using gantry machines and robots
  • Drill, ream and countersink composite and metallic components
  • Load and set aircraft components in machining fixtures and jigs
  • Deburr and under head radius aircraft components and assemblies
  • Set and adjust cutters using tool setting equipment to achieve aircraft design tolerances and dimentional requirements
  • Ability to use Renishaw probing equipment
  • Participate fully in local continuous improvement activities
  • Work in line with Health & Safety site requirements

  • Good hand skills and co-ordination
  • Understand aircraft drawings, limits and quality systems
  • Good working knowledge of Renishaw probing equipment
  • Ability to select, amend, run, prove, and interrogate CNC machine programmes
  • Self-motivation with good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both alone and in small teams
  • Ability and willingness to undertake training and understanding of composite manufacturing and machining techniques and processes
  • To take responsibility to “self-certify” own work
  • Working knowledge of IT systems including SAP and Microsoft packages and CNC machine programming

Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship or recognized equivalent qualification
  • 5 years minimum CNC machining experience of aircraft components using drawings and processes
  • Experience of working with Siemens 840D control systems
