This position will be based in Glasgow, UK. The successful candidate will be part of the Boeing Research & Technology – Europe Materials and Manufacturing Technologies team. The team partners with Boeing business units to execute R&D programs to develop, demonstrate, and implement innovative production systems that satisfy our customers’ needs by significantly improving safety, flow, cost, quality, ergonomics, and process stability.

The Boeing Research and Technology – Europe Materials & Manufacturing Technologies team is leading an R&D programme with the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Scottish Enterprise to establish an advanced, near-net shape aerospace metal manufacturing cell for short lead time and cost efficient production of aircraft hardware in Glasgow. The technologies to be developed within the R&D program have the potential to provide significant improvement in unit cost, cycle time and productivity in a range of components on current and future aircraft. The program aims to:

  • Leverage the world class metals forming capability of the AFRC in Glasgow, Scotland
  • Design, assemble and test innovative metal forming equipment and optimize the process
  • Develop a new manufacturing process for aircraft actuator components

The ideal candidate is required to provide on-site support and drive the technical direction of the R&D project to lead the execution for technology transition into Boeing products. The work will be done in collaboration with other Boeing Research & Technology – Europe engineers, Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA) Fabrication engineers and the AFRC. The candidate needs to be well versed in metal forming and direct technology development, technology partnerships, government interaction and partnership opportunities and in university/industrial consortia arrangements. Shall have project execution experience including scheduling and planning and be capable of undertaking/managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

There will be ongoing parallel & future programmes focusing on improving productivity & cost efficiency to support delivery of programme.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical steering of and validation for collaborative methods, through a familiarity with metals forming and forging manufacturing technologies – both conventional and novel.
  • Collaborate with Boeing business units, Boeing Research & Technology centers, academia, and wider industry research institutes to deliver impactful technology solutions according to the program schedule.
  • Engage with the Boeing internal team and external suppliers and the universities to develop follow on public funded projects and manage them from technical perspective
  • Demonstrate analytical problem-solving capability in an emergent, production environment including defining and executing solutions, from conception through to validation
  • Generate, define, and protect intellectual property within the research environment
  • Track and monitor existing programs and provide status updates to support reporting to internal and external funding bodies
  • Work closely within a small, remote team while collaborating with Boeing teams located globally to deliver technology objectives aligning to wider business requirements
  • Be familiar with remote/virtual working and working closely with external entities across diverse disciplines within a large organization
  • Demonstrate experience developing novel technologies, including their critical evaluation and iterative refinement, to meet defined goals and schedules
  • Evaluate, understand, and apply technical specifications and standards

Technical

  • Knowledge and experience in metals forming and forging
  • Processes such as super plastic forming , forging or thread rolling would be an advantage
  • Experience with large industrial plant, particularly presses and forging equipment

Profile

  •   Higher degree in Material Science or Mechanical Engineering or degree with experience in industrial or R&D projects environment
