Reaction Engines is looking for a high calibre individual with experience in System Engineering & Systems Design of complex integrated systems:

  • To lead an Engineering Team within the Engineering function, effectively managing the Engineering resource to meet business demands and organisational goals.
  • Promote and improve the implementation of Systems Engineering capability within Reaction Engines to improve delivery and outcomes of projects as well as identifying, driving and developing the core capability of the team.

Responsibilities

Principle Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

  • To lead the Engineering team in alignment with the business plan. This will of course in future involve the active development of the Engineering plan, budgets (it is run as a cost centre), forecasts and critical deliverables, outputs and timelines.
  • To create the optimum organisational structure within the Engineering team.
  • To ensure appropriate process, rigour and governance and compliance in alignment with business plan.
  • To ensure appropriate development, monitoring and training of the direct team and sub-teams, so as to ensure robustness of delivery in this fast growth, flexible and inexact/ambiguous (due to technology) environment.
  • Successfully nurturing key talent and reviewing the structure to ensure optimal delivery to the business.
  • Manage the employment lifecycle of your direct reports, including but not limited to recruitment, performance management, recognition, task management, absence management to ensure a best-in-class delivery team supported by excellence in both people management and technical delivery skills.
  • To build strong internal relationships with the top team colleagues; as well as external stakeholders such as suppliers, partners and customers/potential customers.
  • Being the champion of Engineering resource with all stakeholders – and building strong, collaborative, outward-facing relationships in line with business trajectory, challenges and ambitions.
  • Developing metrics so as to determine and improve upon Engineering delivery. Prioritising cost savings and implementing lean/optimised engineering delivery supported by ongoing continuous improvement initiatives and programmes.
  • Build, develop and maintain an environment focused on quality, delivery and customer advocacy, consistently learning and improving in alignment with company vision and values.
  • Being at all times a Champion and Ambassador for the Engineering team and all elements of engineering quality, outputs and compliance.
  • Observe and comply with policies and procedures for Health and Safety at Work and observe and continually promote equal opportunities and customer care in compliance with organisational aims and objectives.
  • Participate in learning and development activities that develop personal effectiveness and assist in improving performance in the role.
  • Requirements management, Interface management, Test, verification and validation, risk analysis, sensitivity analysis, supplier interface, system integration, build logic, inputs to SE gates and milestones.
  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required in line with the level of responsibility of the post and in order to meet the changing needs of the organisation.

Profile

Experience:

Essential:

  •  Experience of systems engineering for complex mechanical systems or in challenging operating environments.
  •  Experience of system integration.
  •  Experience of interacting with customers, suppliers and project teams.

Desirable:

  • Management of engineering teams.
  • Management of budgets.
  • Experience of space systems development.
  • Experience of gas turbine engine development.
  • Experience of ESA project lifecyle, and ECSS standards.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  •  Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject or Physics.

Desirable:

  • Chartered Membership of a professional body such as RAeS, IMechE, IET or INCOSE an advantage.
  • MEng, MSc, PhD or post graduate qualifications an advantage.

Skills & Behaviour:

Essential:

  •  Advanced communication skills, written and spoken with all levels of the company.
  •  Relationship management/building.
  •  Attention to detail and quality.
  •  Able to take the ‘system view’ of a project and interact with subject ‘experts’.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools.
