Responsibilities

The Role:

Responsible for the production of engineering drawings in accordance with BS.8888 using CAD software. All drawings to be produced to a high standard of accuracy and clarity.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Co-ordinate the collection and dissemination of technical information between/within the company and customer.
  • Lead compliance based assessments for a variety of certification and associated approvals.
  • Support selection of components to meet customer defined specifications,leading to creation of procurement specifications.
  • Create support and lead as directed the creation of project specific documentation including but not limited to: ILS, RCM, RAM, Design Reports,Operating Manuals
    • Safety assessments
    • Risk assessments
    • FMEAs
    • Design reviews
    • Design calculations
    • Reliability calculations
    • Creation of activity and test plans
  • Lead/attend design and project meetings as required.
  • Participate where required in system reviews, verification and validation activities.
  • Responsible for the draughting requirements and production of engineering drawings relating to project definitions that you are assigned.
  • Maintain liaison with design and technical authority and project engineers throughout the term of the projects.
  • Ensure Company technical requirements and relevant professional standards and codes of practice are maintained and adhered to
    • To include checking and approval of engineering drawings and specifications, undertaking calculation packs to prove design assumptions
  • Update and maintain parts details, sub-assemblies and bill of materials in the operations database.
  • Receive new draft company specifications and standards from the various departments. Ensure all documentation received is to the required company standard and filed within the company system to ensure access is provided for the relevant personnel.
  • Assist other members of the design team with background knowledge of company products/equipment and relevant engineering principles.
  • Deputise in the absence of the Technical Manager to ensure day-to-day smooth running of the design department.
  • Ensure only the latest copies of drawings are available electronically for use throughout the company.
  • Management of the ECN procedure for the department, supporting the creation of impact assessments, and approvals routinely.

General activities:

  • Carrying out any other ad-hoc duties as required to support the needs of the business.
  • Working and/or visiting various sites, as required, for short periods, which may involve absence from home.
  • Maintaining a continuous professional development to ensure knowledge is up to-date.

Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in relevant discipline (Mech./Chem. Eng.).
  • Previous experience within a design office in a leading role.
  • Undertaking legislative compliance technical files and reviews.
  • Proficient user of Solidworks or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Good knowledge of BS.8888 drawing practices – particularly geometric tolerances.
  • Able to build long-term successful client partnerships, both internally and externally.
  • Flexible, enthusiastic individual who is self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative.
  • Pragmatic approach to tasks.
  • Strong self-management and organisation skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to design for cost effective manufacture.

Preferred but not essential:

  • Knowledge of ISO9000 or a similar QA system.
  • I.Eng Or C.Eng accreditation.
  • Knowledge of critical aspects (emc, shock etc.) related to the design of equipment for military applications.
  • Experience of working within a defence environment.
  • Strong presentation skills, confident speaker and professionally presented.
  • Confident user of the Microsoft Suite.

Other requirements:

  • Candidates must have an existing right to live and work in the UK.
  • Candidates will need to undergo an internal BPSS check prior to gaining site access.
  • Candidates will also need to either hold a current SC clearance or be willing and eligible to undergo a Security Clearance check (SC level) upon starting their employment with the company. To gain SC clearance you will normally need at least 5 years’ UK residency.
