The Mechanical Engineering Function at Leonardo Luton is looking to recruit a Principal Stress Engineer to join the existing team.

Responsible for conducting Stress Analysis, communicating the results and advising on all aspects of stress engineering activities. The role will involve working with multi-discipline project teams across the Luton Leonardo Electronic Warfare Business.

This is an office based role using display screen equipment working full time hours which can often be in a demanding environment. As part of this role you will be expected to travel possibly both in the UK and abroad, you may also be expected to stay overnight as part of this travel. Working to tight deadlines either on a regular or ad hoc basis will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse and assess mechanical designs for strength, performance and safety against regulatory and customer requirements using finite element techniques and classical hand calculations.
  • Provide guidance on structural design improvements where necessary.
  • Be able to hold Stress approval signatory and be responsible and accountable for that given project.
  • Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and materials based on a sound understanding of the mechanical engineering of the product.
  • Be open to change and developments in new technologies and methodologies.
  • Verify and approve design data and change notices for equipment.
  • Support the structural aspects of product development through design, test and certification.
  • Provide team leadership with effective communication.
  • Deliver analysis solution against requirements within budget and timescales.
  • Support visits and meetings at UK sites and suppliers when required.

Profile

  • The candidate should have a degree in Mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering with post-graduate experience in stress and F&DT engineering.
  • Professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer or proven associated competencies is desirable.
  • It is advantageous for the candidate to have experience in the design, development and test of electronics packaging and/or aerospace equipment.
  • A proven knowledge of structural analysis and previous experience in developing equipment for extreme operating environments is essential.
  • The candidate will be competent in the use of Finite Element Analysis, preferably Siemens NX/Nastran, along with a proven knowledge of hand calculations.
  • Experience of environmental testing methods for design verification is desirable with knowledge of Mil-Std-810 and DO160.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory Standards such as Def Stan 00-970.
  • Verbal and written communication skills are essential in this role as there will be a high level of interface with both internal and external customers.
  • It is advantageous for the candidate to have experience in the analysis of composite materials.
  • Familiarity with CAD packages, preferably PTC Creo.
