The Manufacturing Engineer will lead the development and organisation of production operations; proactively identify opportunities for process improvements; work across multiple functions of the business; and implement solutions.

This role will develop a successful workflow, develop new procedures, policies, and identify equipment/ tooling to increase efficiency in all operations – as well as playing a key role in health & safety and continuous improvement.

  • Technology & Engineering. Design, deliver and support high-integrity systems from our facilities in Portsmouth, Manchester and Melksham. These include: atmosphere control systems for nuclear submarines and thermal management systems for chemical processing and energy industries.
  • Consulting and Programme Services (CaPS). Provide through life services to enable our clients to manage the evolution of their own systems and services, in their own domain. Leveraging our long heritage of experience of designing, delivering and supporting safety, mission and business critical systems, we provide individuals with domain leading knowledge, skills and experience who can work within client teams or take full responsibility for the delivery of outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement by reviewing production processes and tooling to identify and implement processes that will reduce cost, time and defects.
  • Reviewing developments in machinery and manufacturing techniques that will sustain effective and lasting change.
  • Lead and support improvement projects – LEAN deployment, 5S and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor performance by gathering relevant data, identify, and implement improvement opportunities.
  • Develop effective relationships that enable the influence of new product development to be designed for manufacture. Support other department members to ensure we are working together to achieve overall business goals.
  • Source suppliers and partners to challenge the status quo.
  • Create and maintain the ethos of a ‘right first time’ culture.
  • Justify the return on any investment delivering an easily measureable ROI on each project or capital investment.
  • Implementation of legislative and best practice standards associated with continuous improvement.

2. General activities

  • Carry out any other ad-hoc duties as required to support the needs of the business.
  • Provide a professional back-up service for colleagues during peak times or during absence.
  • Maintain continuous professional development to ensure knowledge is up to date.
  • Act as an ambassador for the company in all interactions with customers and the public.

Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • HND or Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Manufacturing Engineering or relevant experience.
  • H&S Champion with knowledge of ISO 18001.
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • Detailed knowledge of NPI / NPD.
  • Flexibility, enthusiasm, self-motivated and able to work well under own initiative.
  • Able to build long-term successful client partnerships, both internally and externally.
  • Able to negotiate and influence others.
  • Decision-making / problem solving skills.
  • Strong presentation skills, confident speaker.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and tools (e.g. SixSigma, LEAN, 5S etc.).
  • Previous experience of an ERP / MRP system.
  • Practical competence in mechanical assembly.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, specifications and procedures.
  • Good time management skills with the ability to prioritise work and manage a number of tasks concurrently.

Preferred but not essential:

  • NEBOSH or on the pathway towards
  • Knowledge of BS 8888 drawing practices
  • Experience of working within a defence environment
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 or a similar QMS system
  • Six Sigma, Green Belt and / or Black Belt certified

Other requirements:

  • Candidates must have an existing right to live and work in the UK.
  • Candidates will need to undergo an internal BPSS check prior to gaining site access.
  • Candidates will also need to either hold a current SC clearance or be willing and eligible to undergo a Security Clearance check (SC level) upon starting their employment with the company. To gain SC clearance you will normally need at least 5 years’ UK residency.
