As an Electrical Design Engineer within the Launch Engineering Team you will help develop and maintain launch infrastructure to support the world’s first mass-produced orbital launch vehicle. You will be responsible for all ground side power systems at our launch complexes which include LC1 on the Mahia Peninsular and LC2 at Wallops Island, Virginia, USA. Our Launch Engineering team continues to grow to support Rocket Lab’s continued expansion. The team is based at Rocket Lab’s Mt Wellington facility and travel regularly to our different launch locations.

As a senior member of the engineering team you will be a subject matter expert and technical decision maker.

Responsibilities

  • Design – You will play a leading part in the team designing the launch range electrical systems as well as risk assessments, system hazard analyses and FMEA’s, undertaking failure investigations and root cause analysis
  • Test & Integration – You’ll be tasked with developing and executing test plans & procedures to conduct component and system level testing of launch pad systems and vehicle interface
  • Operational Support – Working closely with our Test & Operations team you will ensure that systems are operational whilst also designing and maintaining launch pad systems and procedures
  • Team Development – As a senior member of the team you will under review engineering designs and provide guidance to the teams more junior engineers

Profile

Preferred skills and expertise

  • Electrical engineering degree or equivalent
  • 6+ years’ industry experience
  • Experience with design, commissioning, operation and maintenance of power supply and distribution systems including generators and UPS’s
  • Knowledge of low and high voltage AC & DC systems.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical equipment, data acquisition, control, and automation systems
  • Ability to read, understand, and produce electrical schematics
  • Experience with AutoCAD
  • Ability to work in fast paced, autonomously driven environment
  • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior engineers

Desirable skills

  • Experience with launch pad systems OR oil and gas, process, mining, or other similar industry
  • Experience with EPLAN
  • Experience with NI LabVIEW an asset
  • Experience with design of electrical systems for explosive atmosphere environments (AS/NZS/IEC 60079 or equivalent)
