We design, manufacture, and test our own rocket engines in house and are currently developing engines for our first, second and third stages of our Skyrora XL vehicle, as well as engines for our Skylark L suborbital launch vehicle. We utilise cutting edge additive manufacturing techniques and assembly processes to produce our engines, and the welding works done on our engines must be completed to the highest standard.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a diligent and detail-oriented junior welder (TIG) to join our fast-paced engine manufacturing team, to be trained in Aerospace grade rocket engine welding techniques by our Chief Welder, and from then on will be responsible for welding fluid systems and various subassemblies for our suite of rocket engines. The candidate will report directly to the Head of Engineering and work with teams across our divisions (test site, operations, vehicle assembly, etc).

This role requires scrupulous work, where attention to detail and quality is required. The systems being welded are complex, flight-capable equipment and must endure a significant range of operating conditions on their route to space. The candidate shall be present at every stage in the welding process, from fabrication to inspection and quality assurance.

Working as part of the Engine Manufacturing team, you will:

  • Be trained on rocket engine welding processes from our Chief Welder.
  • Coordinate with project managers on manufacturing timelines and implementation.
  • Carry out welding processes on our fleet of rocket engines.
  • Coordinate with engine manufacturing team.
  • Analyse engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.
  • Make a continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively.
  • Assist in managing and maintaining the engine welding bay workshop.
  • Check of work after task completion to ensure job is complete to required specifications.
  • Be part of a dynamic and fast paced team that is putting the UK back into space.

Profile

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience (Minimum level 3 TIG award) in TIG welding with one or more of the following materials: Inconel, Stainless steel, Carbon steel, Aluminium (ideal candidate would have just finished an apprenticeship).
  • Academic minimum of GCSE’s (National 5 Awards) or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of DC Welding techniques and fulfilling engineering requirements.
  • Knowledge of standard workshop tools and skilled in their operation.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety hazards related to welding and the general workshop operations.
  • Knowledge of weld quality assurance techniques for our outsourced weld checking process.
  • Knowledge of welding for both high and low-pressure fluid systems.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift at least 25kg unassisted.
  • Must be willing to travel for work.
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling for extended periods of time.
  • Must be willing to work in a dynamic teamwork-oriented environment.
  • Must be determined to make a significant contribution to UK Space launch capability.
  • Valid passport.
