This position forms part of ESA’s Advance Recruitment Scheme which is established to provide appropriate staffing resources when requirements materialise.

Appointments are therefore made for an initial duration of two years upon which you may be appointed to a permanent post at the Agency.

Description

Systems Engineer in the CubeSat Systems Unit, Projects Office, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The CubeSat Systems Unit is responsible for the project management and system engineering of CubeSat satellite missions for technology in-orbit demonstration implemented within the Directorate.

The Unit also provides technical support to Programme Directorates as required in the area of CubeSat Systems.

Responsibilities

• Managing and participating in the System team for the Unit’s in-orbit demonstration CubeSat projects in all phases;
• Providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in System Engineering for in-orbit demonstration and CubeSat systems throughout all project phases;
• Participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluations of procurement proposals;
• Contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s Technology Programmes;
• Initiating and managing R&D activities covering long- and short-term needs in CubeSat systems for in-orbit demonstration;
• Monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends in CubeSat systems and technologies, and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise.

Profile

Technical competencies

• General background and specific experience in the technical domains covered by the position;
• Project support experience in a relevant domain;
• Spacecraft systems knowledge;
• Hands-on hardware experience;
• Understanding of and practical experience with related technologies, R&D trends and the industrial landscape;
• Experience in managing and monitoring industrial activities, participation in reviews.

Education

A Master’s degree in aerospace engineering or a major scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

• Experience in space projects, including a background in spacecraft system or subsystem design, engineering and verification aspects;
• Specific knowledge of CubeSat systems & related miniaturised technologies, technology demonstration projects and industrial experience;
• Knowledge and experience in design, development and verification of avionics, including AOCS/GNC/FDIR functions, preferably for CubeSats, would be an asset.
