Space Applications Services is a company based in the Brussels area (BE) that provides products and services for the space sector in many areas from Avionics, Robotics, Human Exploration, Science and Earth Observation. As part of the NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return Missions, the ESA Sample Fetch Rover (SFR) will have the ambitious task to navigate autonomously the Mars surface, locate and retrieve the soil and atmospheric samples previously collected and load them on the ascent vehicle for their return to Earth. On behalf of ESA, Space Applications Services is looking for a System Engineer to support the SFR Fetching System Team and support the SFR Fetching System Developments. The candidate will work in close cooperation with the Fetching System Robotics Engineer. The successful candidate will be based at our customer premises at European Space Agency-ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. At Space Applications Services, the position is in the Services Department, Engineering Team. The candidate will mainly report to the ESA Fetching System (FS) Team Leader and the Engineering Team Lead at Space Applications Services.

Responsibilities

  Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Development, qualification and delivery of the RSTA Detection System (RDS), a software responsible for autonomous detection
  • Overview of the Software Development & Qualification activities related to the Fetching System in close coordination with the SFR Software system engineer
  • Definition of the FS operational aspects and activities (ConOps, feasibility, implementation, etc.):
    • Coordination with the SFR surface operations system engineer, to ensure they are properly reflected in the RDS and AGS designs
    • Participation to operations-related reviews and interface with all the relevant stakeholders
  • Functional Verification of the end-to-end FS, including the needed FV infrastructure, i.e. simulators, facilities and Ground Support Equipment
  • Support to the FS Team Leader in general systems engineering tasks (e.g. interfaces, technical budgets, verification).

Profile

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
  • Demonstrated widespread and proven experience in:
    • Aerospace or human spaceflight activities management, including development, integration and operations activities of complex payloads and/or spacecraft
    • Project development phases for ESA projects (i.e. B2/C/D/E)
    • Interfacing with partners in an international environment is an asset
  • Experience in Robotics-related space projects or payloads is an asset.
