The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the

Under the direct authority of the Director General, the Director of Earth Observation Programmes is responsible for contributing to ESA-wide management, supporting the ESA Director General in the discharging of all relevant responsibilities and tasks and participating in the pursuit of ESA’s overall objectives. The Director contributes in the area of Space Applications to forming the “Team of Teams” at senior management level.
In the framework of the ESA matrix organisation comprising programme directorates and support directorates, the Director of Earth Observation Programmes, under delegation from the Director General, is responsible for the definition, planning and execution of the Agency’s Earth Observation programmes, consistent with the European Strategy for Space and taking into account the worldwide environment and its main actors. The Director is responsible for the implementation of all ESA activities in Earth Observation and the preparation of new proposals in this area.
Requirements
Applicants should be very knowledgeable of the key stakeholders in Earth observation in Europe and worldwide, and should have a well-established network and a deep understanding of challenges and opportunities in Earth observation.
Key qualities required for the post are an innovative spirit and a strategically oriented mind, a proven capacity to lead change and manage people and teams, excellent relationship management and negotiation skills and the ability to influence high-level decisions.
Applicants must be eligible for security clearance by their national security administrations.
Education
Applicants for this post should have a higher, preferably technical or scientific, education and need to have in-depth knowledge of and experience in Earth observation, preferably acquired in an international setting and including close cooperation with partner organisations.
