For our office in Darmstadt, Germany, we are looking for an experienced DevOps engineer, with experience in systems design, GNU/Linux system administration, containerisation and enterprise cloud orchestration technologies and optionally knowledge of satellite Earth Observation data processing systems.
As a member of our Ground Systems group in Darmstadt, you will be initially working on the development, integration and testing of container-based data processing systems for our customer, EUMETSAT. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to be involved in the development of high-performance data processing systems using latest technologies.
 

Responsibilities

As a DevOps Specialist, you will support Terma’s Ground System group in the development, testing, deployment and customer support of systems with a focus on satellite Data Processing using cloud-orchestration technologies.
You will be responsible for the overall design, implementation and documentation of the on-premise systems hosting the container-based hybrid environment for data-processing.
The position can involve any aspect of system and software development following formal development processes and standards, including:

  • Requirements analysis
  • System architecture analysis and design
  • Detailed design and implementation
  • Integration and system testing
  • Formal validation and acceptance
  • Delivery to the customer and deployment
  • Customer support

Development work will be performed using modern methodologies with focus on IaC (Infrastructure as code) principles and automated deployment via CI/CD.
 
The work includes the production of deliverable documents, including design documents, test plans and reports, and user manuals.
This is a full-time position to be normally located at Terma’s premises in Darmstadt with the planned start date on 1st October 2021.
 
 

Profile

Qualifications & Competencies
In addition to having a university degree in a relevant engineering field, applicants should have at least 4 years of relevant professional working experience.
Required skills and experience:

  • Systems architecture covering areas such as containerisation, cloud computing, orchestration, hosted processing, EO data access / formats
  • Significant professional experience with deployment and administration of open-source software related to container-orchestration:
    • Kubernetes
    • Rancher container management platform
    • Helm package manager for Kubernetes
  • Experience in GNU/Linux system administration or ability to demonstrate advanced GNU/Linux knowledge
  • Good understanding of computer networking essentials and protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS, LDAP, …)
  • Hands-on experience in IT Automation (Ansible) and building CI/CD pipelines (GitLab)
  • At least two years’ experience with Python programming and other scripting languages such as Bash
  • Demonstrated experience in writing of formal technical documentation in English.

 
Other preferred skills and experience:

  • Experience with:
    • HTCondor high-throughput computing software framework
    • PostgreSQL
    • Prometheus/Grafana for systems monitoring
    • Source code management using Git
  • Technologies:
    • Parallel file systems (e.g. IBM Spectrum Scale, GlusterFS)
    • Batch processing
    • High Throughput Computing (HTC)
  • Earth Observation data processing, ideally in the EUMETSAT environment;

You will be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, able to work calmly and accurately under stress and able to work without supervision.
You will be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan your work and cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You must have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills (verbal and written) are important.
