About this job

This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to support exploration and exploitation of SABRE engine derived technology in adjacent markets or new areas of application. The technical team has solved some exceptionally difficult challenges in developing the SABRE engine – solutions that have utility in a range of other applications. Advanced manufacturing processes allow construction of heat exchange systems of exceptional performance to weight and performance per volume. We also work with materials tolerant to challenging working fluids such as supercritical CO2, hydrogen & helium.

Reaction Engines Ltd Applied Technologies Group are looking for a high calibre individual with a strong understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer along with experience in delivering analysis and subsequent design solutions. The candidate will be responsible for the application and further development of our advanced heat exchanger technology. They will be responsible for leading work packages, assessing analytical and numerical solutions, and generating independent designs to be presented to senior engineers and managers for comparison.

The ideal candidate would therefore be creative and independent minded with a track record of delivery and would be confident presenting and justifying their solutions and recommendations to peers, seniors, and external partners.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Aerothermal Engineering Project Lead the role will include:

  • Providing fluid dynamic, thermodynamic and heat transfer analysis in support of Applied Technologies technology development activities
  • Developing design solutions based on analysis
  • Working with the Applied Technologies Engineering Leads, customers and partners to define system requirements
  • Identifying new and novel solutions to the technical problems
  • Technically leading projects
  • Working with the engineering design teams and external partners to deliver all aspects of the thermal design and analysis
  • Supporting research and development projects, as required
  • Preparing, presenting and reporting technical work to peers, seniors, external suppliers and customers

Profile

  • Qualified to degree level in engineering or science; ideally with a strong focus on fluid dynamics, thermodynamics or heat transfer with an appropriate level of industrial experience
  • Masters, PhD or significant industrial experience is desirable

Essential:

  • In depth understanding of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer subjects
  • Knowledge of analysis techniques, methods and principles
  • Expert user of CFD including meshing, execution and post-processing as well as experience in low order modelling
  • Experience of experimental programmes including the acquisition, analysis and reduction of experimental data
  • Coding skills particularly in MATLAB, Python, C/C++, FORTRAN
  • Experience of research and development in an applied fluid dynamics field such as aerospace propulsion, energy or automotive
  • Ability to lead technology teams to achieve creative solutions
  • Must be adaptable to new projects and design directions
  • Be capable of contributing to the development of our in-house analysis and design toolsets

Desirable

  • Experience in two-phase flow modelling
  • Exposure to a manufacturing, prototyping or development environment
  • Experience in thermal software simulation tools such as ANSYS or Thermica
  • Experience with using CAD software systems (e.g. Solidworks)
  • Experience across one or more New Product Introduction cycles
  • Experience working with sub-contractors, partners and customers
  • Must be able to communicate at all levels of the business and with suppliers and customers

Skills and Behaviours

  • Positive and flexible attitude to get the job done
  • Strong can-do approach to work
