The mission and payload operations of ESA’s Earth observation satellites are managed here, and ESRIN is the primary source for the acquisition, distribution, and exploitation of data from these and other non-ESA satellites.

We are currently seeking a EO Radar Altimetry Science Specialist to join our team in Frascati, Italy. As a valued member of our diverse team, you will be involved in supporting the Agency to monitor projects related to Radar Altimetry and to further stimulate the exploitation of ESA EO missions for Science and Applications covering a variety of studies such as the Cryosphere, Oceanography, Continental Hydrology, and Climate Change. With CryoSat-2, Sentinel-3, Sentinel-6 and SWOT altimetry missions currently flying, and SAR and FF-SAR processing schemes available, microwave altimetry sensors will play a leading role in future EO activities, Fos project, ensuring its seamless operation.

Responsibilities

  • Support to definition of requirements for planning & validation activities, products, software and tools.
  • Support to algorithmic development and validation.
  • Support to data analysis.
  • Participation to project reviews & meetings.
  • Review of project software, data & documentation during various project phases, raising RIDS and SPRs on deliverables.
  • Tracking of actions, RIDS and SPRs to ensure their resolution.
  • Generation of technical notes to support projects.
  • Support the organisation of Workshops & Conferences.

Profile

  • University Degree in EO-related disciplines, Radar Engineering and physics
  • Experience in products and algorithms development
  • Experience in Cryosphere research
  • Testing and validation experience
  • Python, MATLAB, R, ESA BRAT Toolbox
  • A broad understanding of sensors on board ESA EO Missions, their geophysical products’ content and their applications, as well as a good understanding of Radar & Laser Altimetry sensors and products is an asset. The focus is on SAR & FF-SAR Altimetry.
  • Cloud computing and data analysis competences (eg. AI) would be beneficial, as well as experience in project management
