We are looking for a dynamic Optical Instrument/System Engineer Support to future EO mission to join our team at the esteemed ESA-ESTEC site in the Netherlands. The ideal candidate will report to the Head of the Optical Instruments section. He/she will liaise with various members of the division, supporting the section in the area of instruments, optics technologies, calibration.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Future Missions and instrument Division (EOP-FM) for the preparatory activities of new Earth Observation (EO) missions and to follow developments.
  • To critically review the work performed by industry within studies run by the Division, mainly during phase 0 and phase A of the EO missions.
  • Development, implementation, validation and maintenance of performance assessment tools for various spaceborne optical instruments encompassing both passive (spectrometers, imagers) and active (lidar) instruments.
  • Technical support to the assessment of the instrument performance.
  • Investigate, propose and support the follow-up of studies on optical instruments and technologies.
  • Technical support to translation of mission/observation requirements to instrument requirements.

Profile

  • Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Physics and optics.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Relevant experience in remote-sensing optical instruments and associated performance analysis methods is an asset.
  • Good familiarity with computer programs such as Python, MATLAB.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
  • Methodical and proactive,
  • Good general knowledge of ESA Earth Observation missions.
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team within the boundaries of assigned tasks and a stringent schedule.
  • Comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.
  • Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of another EU member state language is an asset.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the EU.
