Your Mission:
For an energy system based solely on renewable energies it is necessary not only to link the sectors of electricity, heat and cold generation as well as transport but also to include efficient energy storage technologies. Thermal energy storage has a high potential since storing thermal energy is cost-efficient and the heat demand is twice as high as the electricity demand in Germany. Storing energy in the reaction enthalpy of chemical reactions (thermochemical energy storage) offers further advantages like high energy densities and low thermal losses. Current works address the reversible gas-solid reaction of calcium hydroxide to calcium oxide and steam because the materials are non-toxic and cheaply available at large scales.
The applicability of the reaction system has already been successfully demonstrated mainly in lab scale fixed bed reactors at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C. However, experiments showed that the low thermal conductivity, the agglomeration and the movement of the material remains challenging.
The institute of engineering thermodynamics in Cologne develops new chemical reactors to meet these challenges. Current work focuses on the thermal charging with electric energy. Here, one experimental as well as one numerical investigation is available. In terms of experimental works, the set-up, start-up and optimization of a new test bench should be addressed. For the numeric part, a simulation model should be set up, validated with existing experimental data and the influence of different parameters should be assessed.
