Serco is involved in a project aiming to support and implement a systematic knowledge-sharing process for the Application Element of the Earth Observation programme of the European Space Agency (ESA). Overall, the project is promoting innovation and advances for the operational utilisation of the results of projects covering various subjects. Initially it focuses on four thematic groups of high-priority at European and international level. Sustainable Development Goals: Food systems, Ecosystem & Biodiversity, Carbon, Energy and the Green Transition.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Serco Contract manager, main responsibilities are:

  • Acquire knowledge arising from the results of existing ESA EO Applications projects (e.g., new methods, new algorithms, new tools, new workflows, new datasets) that are relevant for a given policy theme and be able to use the projects output to feed end user processes/systems.
  • Contribute to the creation of new narratives with a multi-project approach that can be practically used as storyboards during promotion of results, e.g. demonstration and showcases events, hands-on utilization guidance, demonstrations of cost-benefits effective results, promotion of new methods and tools, practical workshops;.
  • Interface new potential users of the tools, advise them and support tools/methods integration directly at the end-user processes/system, deliver practical utilization and functioning exercises.
  • Identify possible evolution for products, tools and methods, propose new functionalities with the support of thematic experts.
  • Participate to project Consortium meetings, keep track of actions, and liaise with partners within the consortium.

Profile

The specialist will work in a team of multilingual experts. In order to answer to our current customers, we are looking for a candidate that is fluent in English. Additional European languages are an asset.

The successful applicant will hold an university degree in Physics, Remote Sensing or similar, have an in-depth knowledge of satellite remote sensing (optical and SAR), image analysis,  GIS technology, applications and programming. In particular, experience in EO data processing and applications exploiting modern technologies (cloud computing, big data, AI…) and some teaching and/or communication experience are sought.

Other skills:

  • Experience in multi-source data integration.
  • Experience in scientific and application project management.
  • Good documentation writing skills.
  • Experience in data Science and tools (e.g. Python, R, SQL, Matlab, C++).
  • Ability to manage several tasks in parallel and to prioritise.
  • Capability to work in a team.
  • Pro-active approach to problem identification and resolution.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
